| Tiivistelmä: | A model of the effect of alternative compensation arrangements on productive efficiency in medical group practices is developed and tested. The maximum likelihood production frontier estimation is employed. A simple behavioural model of the determination of productive efficiency is provided and a new interpretation of the economic measure of technical efficiency is presented. "A behavioural production function" is derived that relates production to individual responses to incentives, and indicates the impossibility of recovering the parameters of the production technology from observed behavior.
