Tiivistelmä:Manufacturing today is not flexible enough to cope with the batch production techniques demanded by its market. Despite the existence and use of advanced equipment, manufacturing largely consists of islands of automation. This is because of the lack of one communication standard which all machines can use to talk to each other and also to humans at all levels of the factory. Computer integrated manufacturing seeks to provide the technology to link these islands to produce a fully flexible integrated factory.
