Perilous because the failure to act will trigger the most dangerous economic collapse since the depression, and promising because it offers an opportunity to rebuild the system. The principles of a new banking system are discussed in detail. In the new system, only "core banks" would have government insurance; money center banks would disappear, and only a handful of large institutions would dominate sophisticated trading and underwriting activities in global markets; industrial companies would own banks, banking would be profitable business with one major condition of entry - enough capital to rebuild balance sheet; the federal government would play a limited regulatory role. |
