| Tiivistelmä: | This report looks at the market for pedal cycles. Sales of bicycles rose to 2.53 mn, worth 330 mn pounds in 1996, up from 2.25 mn in 1995 but still below the peak of 2.6 mn in 1990. A small decline in sales is estimated for 1997, followed by a gradual increase to 2.5 mn units in 2000, valued at 350 mn pounds. The market benefits to some extent from the heavy incidence of bicycle thefts and subsequent replacement purchases. Over 500,000 bicycles are stolen every year, in spite of the development of improved locks. |
