Tiivistelmä:Although environmental standards in the oil and gas industry have improved over the past decade, concern over pollution, destruction of natural resources and general environmental degradation in Africa is growing rapidly. The condition of the Niger Delta, where the soil in some areas is said to be so soaked in oil that it can be burned and used as a fuel, has increased fears over new projects on the continent. More recently, the proposed Chad-Cameroon pipeline has provoked a storm of protest because of its possible impact upon primary rainforest and the threat of pollution. The environmental outcome of the Chad-Cameroon pipeline project is important not only for its own sake, but because it is to be assumed that any new oil or gas projects in a similar situation may be subjected to the same standards.
