Tiivistelmä:Retrenchment actions often fail to recognize the impact that downsizing has on continuing employees, by increasing job security, and reducing productivity and commitment. Some of the lessons are provided which human resource managers will have to learn. Indepth interviewing of managers, union officials, employees and members of other interest groups are involved into the study. A comparative analysis was undertaken of quite different organizations, in both public and private sectors in Canada and the United Kingdom, facing different magnitudes of cutback, and employing a variety of retrenchment measures. The findings presented are applicable to many other organizations facing similar problems.
