Tiivistelmä:The functional relationship is analyzed between rate of return and market share by using the PIMS data base for German breweries. For some business units in the PIMS data base one finds a positive linear relationship while for services there is a U-shaped relationship. A different functional form is observed in the German brewing industry in which a concave relationship exists. It can be stated, that the sort of relationship between rate of return and market share can only be expressed at the level of the business branch or relevant market. It is a task of future research, how sensibly the functional relationship responds to the different limitation of the business branch or the market.
