| Tiivistelmä: | MDHC (Mersey Docks and Harbours Company), near Liverpool went through a decline over the previous 20 years. This port shared this trend with other British ports. Namely the main axis of British trade swung away from the Commonwealth towards the EEC, to the disadvantage of ports on Britain's Western seaboard. Liverpool, too, had to cope with radical changes in cargo-handling techniques in the late '60s. Efforts were made by a tough new management team and the Thatcher government provided a large amount of subsidies. Part of the company's new entrepreneurialism consists of identifying possible extensions of its existing business. Moreover, a large part of the MDHC's success has been based on its industrial relations. |
