| Tiivistelmä: | The determinants of profit margins of multinational enterprises and local firms in 43 Indian manufacturing industries are examined to seek explanations of the superior performance of the former. A set of hypotheses pertaining to the likely determinants is formulated. Two theoretical possibilities are considered. The empirical analysis finds support for the proposition that multinationals and local firms constitute different strategic groups in an industry and that the former group enjoys greater protection from mobility barriers. This group appears to enjoy advantage over its counterpart especially in knowledge intensive industries. Residual differences are not statistically significant. |
