Tiivistelmä:On June 26, 1986, Ryder Systems purchased Saunders Systems, Inc./, a company with more than 2,000 employees. Once the deal was finalized, a major trucking firm ceased to exist. The story is not unique. Almost 3,000 trucking firms disappeared in the two years prior this merger. It is shown how a tentatively conceived strategy took unintended and unanticipated directions. This case history challenges to re-examine the views on merger and acquisition processes. It offers an adequate framework for describing much of what happened, but fails to provide guidance relative to how the human problems of death by merger can be effectively reduced and managed.
