Tiivistelmä:Most countries have some kind of institutionalized old-age welfare system, usually called a pension system, providing some kind of income after old-age cessation of employment. Pension systems are thus the result of cultural and economic factors. Slovenia became an independent state only in 1991. However, social security already has a long tradition in the country. In Slovenia, the mandatory public pay-as-you-go (PAYG) pension and disability insurance is being reformed through the Pension and Disability Insurance Act (PDIA) in the direction of more severe eligibility conditions for the old-age pension and reduced benefit amounts. The legislation thus transfers even more responsibility for meeting the financial needs of retirement years to the individual him/herself, and also some to employers. Voluntary supplemental pension insurance provides a tax-favourable form of saving for old age and offers individuals a new dimension in choosing their retirement portfolios.
