| Tiivistelmä: | An examination of the very long run in history reveals a close relationship between money and prices over many centuries. The rapid inflations and hyperinflations all came with paper money in the 20th century. In the 1980s and 1990s there has been growing interest in, and discussion of, central bank independence. There has also been widespread agreement that some kind of independence is desirable. What lies behind this is a disappointment with price level performance in the period since the Second World War, and a desire for price stability. |
