| Tiivistelmä: | Banks have proliferated in Russia recently. The country is a long way from establishing a fully commercial banking sector and new central bank requirements may close many of the newcomers. Russia's reformers see privatisation as the key to making the reform process irreversible and consolidating the democratic process. If Russia is pressed for more debt repayments, it may have no choice but to divert more oil and gas. Creditors may have few choices if the country is unable to pay. Recent growth in the number of Russian banks has been extraordinary. 209 banks are listed. |
