Tiivistelmä: | In market economies, money measures value. Money's own value is socially constructed since people attribute worth to a medium whose physical characteristics are essentially irrelevant to its monetary role. When money can be taken for granted and when its social construction is hidden, money works best. Two monetary alternatives - gold-based money and paper money - were debated during the greenback era. This raised a plenty of questions about the nature of monetary value. Using a "macrocultural" approach, there are the rhetoric of greenbacker and bullionist writings analyzed. |
