Tiivistelmä:Russia's rapid economic growth in 1999-2002 challenges the conventional wisdom. It can no longer be taken for granted that the country has structural and institutional weaknesses that will preclude sustained catch-up growth in the longer run. The weaknesses are there, but there are signs they are being reduced and may not necessarily constrain long-run trend growth to 3% p.a. or less. The economic recovery began as the unexpected consequence of an enforced devaluation. It was then reinforced by a rise in oil prices, and unexpectedly prudent fiscal and monetary policy. Broadly, Russia now meets the macroeconomic stability conditions for growth, insofar as the latter can be inferred from Central European experience.
