| Tiivistelmä: | An early version of this article was prepared as a background paper for the Population Summit of the World's Scientific Academies, held in New Delhi during 24-27 October 1993, and was also the basis of the 1993 Sidney Ball Lecture at the University of Oxford, a much shortened version of which was published in Scientific America (Dasgupts 1995a). As with politics, we all have differing opinions about population. Some point to population growth as the cause of poverty and environmental degradation. Others permute the elements of this causal chain, arguing, for example, that poverty is the cause rather than the consequence of increasing numbers. |
