Tiivistelmä:The need to identify hazardous substances in the workplace and to provide workers with detailed information about them led to a national consensus in Canada in 1987. The tripartite process of arriving at the consensus after discussing the operation of the new Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) in practice is described. Under the WHMIS, information known to producer, distributor, supplier and employer-user of a hazardous material is explained to workers in recognition of their "right to know" how they are protected from work-related injury or illness and how to protect themselves and their fellow-workers when working with such materials.
