Tiivistelmä:This article introduces a new viewpoint to the discussion of the impact of divergent national institutional contexts on multinational companies (MNCs). It concentrates on manufacturing organization within MNCs arguing that organization structures and processes are sector specific and affected by national institutional features of the home and host countries. The key question is how actors formulate the interaction of institutional pressures, manufacturing approaches, location choices and work system designs. The results indicate that MNCs apply a 'cherrypicking' strategy of selected use of work system elements, and that manufacturing strategies are highly context specified and diffucult to transfer across countries.
