Tiivistelmä: | The paper focuses on the impact of high energy prices on production in five Pan-Pacific countries: Canada, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and the USA. The two-stage least squares method was applied and it was found that in Korea, where energy prices rose the least /3.0 p.c. per year/, the highest rate /8.96 p.c./ of GDP growth was experienced while in the USA, where the price of energy increased most dramatically /11.2 p.c./, GDP grew at the lowest rate. Short-run GDP elasticity with respect to energy is nearly the same /0.3/ for all industrialized countries. Short-run price elasticity of energy demand is between -0.20 and -0.80 for the four industrialized countries and -0.37 for the Philippines. |
