| Tiivistelmä: | This article examines the use of social welfare and the patterns of exit from and recidivism to long-term recipiency during the 1990-1999 period in Sweden. The results show that the dramatic increase and fall in the number of social assistance recipients during the first five years is caused by the negative development of the labour market. Also the effects of cutbacks in the income maintenance programs were detected. Two groups, young adults and newly arrived immigrants were essential in the boom of long-term recipiency. Especially immigrants faced difficulties in employment and their exit rates were low and recidivism high. |
