Tiivistelmä:Usually the issue of vertical scope has been regarded as a decision of the firm about whether to make or buy. It has been argued however, that this question should not be taken for granted. According to the authors this applies to both dis-integration and re-integration. A study was conducted in the British building industry and based on this the authors have developed a framework to explain why after long periods of vertical specialization the companies are now headed for vertical reintegration. The results show how various groups affect the shaping of the nature and the boundaries of an industry, this way promoting the onset of vertical specialization. The whole process though which the reintegration evolves is described in the article. Firms that are seeking to protect their positions advance the reintegration. These firms enter new markets or they find new ways of leveraging their capabilities. Firms change their institutional context strategically, facilitating the development of all-in-one integrated markets.
