| Tiivistelmä: | The paper considers the topic of temporary slowdown in the industrial countries. In 2002, the economy in the industrial countries recovered from the pronounced weakness that prevailed in the previous year. Most importantly, the US economy turned around, but activity improved significantly also in Japan and the UK. Only in the Euro Area, growth continued to be sluggish reflecting relatively modest policy stimulus and detrimental factors such as a jump in food prices at the start of the year, irritation of consumers in the wake of the introduction of euro currency and, later in the year, the appreciation of the euro. The paper also provides an outlook on the topic recovery that will regain momentum in the course of 2003 (original in German). |
