Tiivistelmä:The purpose of this article is to assess the variety and quality of exports from the new EU member states (NMSs) in the period from 1999 to 2009. The practical relevance of such a study is threefold: recent studies highlight the importance of export variety for economic growth; empirical results imply that export variety was affected by the EU membership; and looking separately at export quality helps understanding price competitiveness better. Our results indicate that all NMSs significantly increased the brands exported to the EU market, the largest increases being achieved in 2004 and after. This implies that integration into the EU market occurs both in the extensive and the intensive dimension. It is also found that all NMSs improved the average quality of their exports during the decade studied although the countries' results vary. Hence, a large portion of the increase in the prices of exports NMSs' export prices resulted from improving quality and did not lead to a loss of competitiveness. Finally, relative quality estimates are much more stable than relative price ones, implying that our measure of relative quality performs better than the traditional proxy.
