Tiivistelmä:A description of the movement towards the creation of single rather than multiple source data collection and information systems, covering the beginnings of research, the role of technology, scanning, the present situation of barcoding, and estimates of the future importance of scanning in the USA and some European countries. A description is given of the single source concept, from test marketing to a future comprehensive system, illustrated with examples of single source systems in the USA and Europe.
