Tiivistelmä:Knowledge is a production factor in modern economic theories. Recently, the definition of knowledge has been extended: knowledge no longer refers solely to codified knowledge but to tacit knowledge as well. In this article , the importance of tacit knowledge in the process of getting and maintaining a competitive advantage in the global competition is underlined. This type of knowledge, which is primarily embodied in people, cannot be acquired in regular educational programmes, but requires 'learning-on- the-job'. An effective management tool for renewing this potential is physical or intellectual mobility. Consequently mobility will be an important factor in the knowledge-based economies of the near future.
