Tiivistelmä:Considerable attention has been paid by researchers to the reason for government growth over the past century. Precious little research, however, has been devoted to how this growing government "pie" is divided between the various political subdivisions of a nation. In this paper we examine the distribution of the United States federal government's net spending (expenditures less taxes) across states. Our findings suggest that the per capita federal net spending obtained by a state is determined by both economic and political-institutional factors. That is , the secured per capita federal net spending depends not only on the concentration of interest groups within the state, but also on the institutional structure through which these groups are represented in the political process.
