TRADE UNIONS

Tiivistelmä:The wage demands of a special trade union are analyzed which covers only one plant and acts selfishly in being concerned only about the welfare of its employed members. The analysis shows that the union's wage demand will be aimed at, and fall short of the maximum wage which yields zero profits, i.e. the wage at the peak of the average revenue product of labour schedule. Although the analysis is partial equilibrium analysis, some macroeconomic implications of the existence of selfish plant-specific trade unions can be drawn. It appears that the appropriate response to "selfish unions" is that government policy should combine aggregate demand management with measures to encourage the ease of entry of new plants.
