Tiivistelmä: | Empirical results indicate that firm-specific wage growth occurs almost exclusively during periods of on-the-job training. The comparative roles played by training and contractual factors in determining within-firm wage growth are examined. The findings suggest that within-firm wage growth is mainly determined by contemporaneous productivity growth. The results provide no evidence that contractual considerations are an important source of firm-specific wage growth. A framework for measurement is presented. The estimates are based on a sample of 5,056 observations for 995 heads of households surveyed in waves 9-17 (1976-1984) of the Michigan Panel Survey of Income Dynamics. |
