| Tiivistelmä: | The nature of the small order problem is considered. The associated advantages and disadvantages of the various policies for dealing with the small order are examined. The calculation and use of the minimum order quantity as a policy for dealing with small orders is demonstrated. The costs which must be considered in case of small orders are grouped and analyzed. Three general classes of reasons for allowing small orders are discussed: a sales orientation; channel pressures; and legal ramification. A number of alternative policies are described: channel co-ordination; standardization of processing for small orders; volume discounting; order consolidation; order handling automation; minimum order quantity. |
