| Tiivistelmä: | On a reasonably lenient interpretation of the rules, all of the members of the European Union (with the possible exception of Greece) will qualify for membership of economic and monetary union next year. It is a matter of individual choice which countries join. It is also a matter of strong probability that at the beginning of 1999 EMU will come into existence. Arrival of the single currency will in due course create a powerful economic bloc in the same division as the US. |
