Tiivistelmä:This paper provides evidence that taxes induce US multinationals to prefer exports rather than foreign production to serve unaffiliated customers in foreign markets. The ratio of exports to foreign production sales to unaffiliated foreign customers is positively related to firm-specific export tax incentives. The tax effect is observed only for firms with binding foreign tax credit positions. A supporting country-lelvel test also documents a link between production location and taxes, in that US multinationals use relatively more exports to serve high-tax foreign markets.
