| Tiivistelmä: | In the PC-software industry, Microsoft is the dominant player. It is often argued that Microsoft has the inferior products but can nevertheless leverage its market power from one market to the other because of network effects. An analysis of the concentration in different market segments shows that the network effects are, in fact, the main source of concentration. But a thorough analysis of the lock-in argument and the leverage argument shows that governmental interventions are not needed in software industry because of the possibility of building compatible products and competitive systems. Technical progress might lead to new market structures earlier than governments can act. |
