ECONOMIC INDICATORS
Kieli:eng
Tiivistelmä:Economic performance continues to be exceptional, with real GDP growth in 1997 set to be the highest among the major seven OECD Member countries. Umemployment is still trending lower, the budget deficit is nearly eliminated and inflation is actually edging down. Whether this combination reflects fundamental changes in the economy is unclear. It is still quite possible to explain modest realised inflation outcomes in spite of tight resources utilisation by temporarily favourable supply conditions. The outlook is for some increase in inflation despite an easing in activity as from the second half of 1998 brought about by projected rises in short- and long-term interest rates, less robust export growth associated with recent increases in the value of the dollar and the fall-out of the Asian financial crisis and slowdown in investments reach desired levels.
