Tiivistelmä: | The present empirical research explores to what extent more versus less successful telecommunications network operators differ in terms of 17 variables capturing various facets of their strategic conduct. Focal operators were the seven so- called "Regional Bell Operating Companies" (=RBOCs) in the USA. Data were collected for the 11-year-period from 1984 to 1994. Even for European resarchers, the look at US-based RBOCs is useful since until 1998 in almost every European country data are available for only one national telecommu- nications carrier making it impossible to search for factors explaining operator performance variance within a single country. For the RBOCs, labour productivity (access lines per employee) was identified as the strongest driver of accounting- and capital market-based measures of corporate success. |
