Tiivistelmä:This empirical study deals with the wage policy in small firms. It is based on data gathered in an own survey among German timber transport companies. The authors have a close look at the relevance of wage agreements, the division of costs and returns of human capital investments and the importance of subjective performance evaluations. Firms pay wages slightly above collectively negotiated wages on average, but there are huge differences between and within single companies. Employers bear human capital investments, which reach considerable amounts, while returns are divided between employer and employee. Timber truck drivers, who have been evaluated as "high-performers" by their employers, receive higher wages than low performing employees (original in German).
