Tiivistelmä: | The Pacific Northwest /Washington, Oregon, and northern California/ timberland causes a dilemma for timber companies and politicians: the activity of these companies endanger the habitat and so the existence of the spotted owl , but preserving the habitat of this species will mean the loss of jobs in the region's timber industry. With regards to this problem, the article describes the history of the land and forest use in the USA. Attention is paid to the conflicting interests of the economic activity and the protection of the environment. After an analysis of the timber industry it is concluded that the technological development of the timber companies will inevitably lead to unemployment in this branch. |
