| Tiivistelmä: | This year is the centenary of the Royal Economic Society. It is interesting to speculate where the second century may take us. To establish possible orders of magnitude it is relevant to have in mind what has happened between 1890 and 1990. Statistical data of development are summarized, major technical innovations and inventions are considered, economic ages are overviewed, and economic experiences of the past century are summed up. Speculations about the continuation of the growth of real production and consumption at the present yearly rate of 2.5 per cent are discussed. Looking forward, the most important factor is the change of growth of population to a static or declining total population. The pattern of employment and housing is projected. |
