| Tiivistelmä: | It was the worst criminal massacre in Taiwan's history. Early on the morning of Nov. 21, killers entered the house of a county chief in Taipei suburb and murdered him and seven others. Chillingly methodical, the assasins taped the victim's eyes before shooting them in the back of the head. The brutal slaying has put a spotlight on the role of gangsterism and hei-jin -- "black gold" or dirty money in Taiwan. And the uproar over the murders is adding to the pressure on President Lee Teng-hui. Last spring, Lang won a landslide election victory after he faced down a menacing China, which suspected him of privately favoring independence. |
