| Tiivistelmä: | Digital Equipment Corp. wants to expand beyond its traditional role as a midrange systems supplier. The company's VAX-clusters and its attempts to penetrate the intelligent desktop market are two major strategic thrusts to accomplish this goal. The more recent commercial DEC users are implementing VAX computers for office automation or deploying them in applications that feed data to IBM or other vendors' mainframes. DEC's ability to move quickly is examined. The packaged software issue is dealt with. Some large-scale users are beginning to treat the VAX as equivalent in stature to IBM mainframes. Software houses line up for VAX too. For a variety of reasons DEC has been able to build expectations for its prospective products. |
