| Tiivistelmä: | The Maastricht treaty, which came into force in November 1993, created the three-pillared European Union (EU). The principal pillar remains the European Community (EC), which is the economic component of the Union, responsible for all the areas of legislation monitored in European Policy Analyst. The other two focus on establishing a common foreign and security policy (CFSP) and promoting cooperation in justice and home affairs. The two new pillars are intergovernmental rather than supranational in their institutional structure. |
