Tiivistelmä:Southern Africa is littered with broken hand pumps that the users are ill equipped to repair. Providing a sustainable water supply to isolated rural populations neither begins nor ends with drilling borehole and installing a hand pump. While appropriate technology is essential, it is only one factor to be taken into consideration when designing a water project. Ohter key factors that need careful consideration include government policy, access to spare parts and training of local communities to repair and maintain the pumps and to manage financial contributions for ongoing costs. This paper describes the experiences of Oxfam Australia in the locality of Chicomo, Inhambane Province, in Southern Mozambique between 1996 and 2002.
