Tiivistelmä:This paper has three objectives. First, the paper outlines the economic and political context of employment relations in Central and Eastern Europe CEE in 2001. The global economy experienced two major shocks in 2001, the collapse of the 'dot.com' boom and the terrorist attack on the US on September 11. The full effects of such shocks have not yet become apparent, but they are likely to have a long-term impact on the economic and political context of CEE. Second, the paper provides a brief account of the major developments in employment relations, focusing on tripartism and industrial conflict. Third, the paper seeks to characterise the employment relations system that has emerged in the region since 1989, showing a four-layered palimpsest.
