Tiivistelmä:Many service organizations follow a scheduling policy whereby employees alternate between customer service and a secondary activity. When queues are short, tellers are diverted to ancillary activities. When queues become long, tellers return to customer service. The concerns for a system are to minimize customer delay, to minimize teller idle time, and to minimize the disruption of ancillary activity. The performance of systems is evaluated. Customers arrive at the server one at a time according to a stationary Poisson process, wait in a single queue and are served on a first-come-first-served basis. In regard of minimization of customer delay and ancillary activity disruption, adding servers when the queue size per server reaches a critical value is superior.
