Tiivistelmä:"Shelter" is used as a concept to describe an entry barrier imposing artificial costs on rival firms as opposed to economic-based barriers which exploit firm-specific competitive advantages. Such barriers are created when firms are able to engage in industry-wide collusion or to influence government regulations. The major difference between the creation of shelter and economic-based entry barriers is discussed. If free trade encourages investment and increased economic activities as well as rationalization, multinational companies /MNCs/ are likely to change their trading behaviour when trade barriers are lowered. The 21 largest Canadian MNCs and 22 largest USA subsidiaries in Canada were surveyed.
