| Tiivistelmä: | The strategies of divestment (speaking on financial assets) and disinvestment (speaking on physical assets) are examined (considered together as "disengagement"). Based on a two-years research project arguments are put forth favoring and opposing disengagement. Traditional arguments for and against are found weak, if not invalid. The primary impact of disengagement (or engagement) is symbolic, not economic. This means that the decisions made by American firms should be based primarily on moral/value considerations, which include a commitment to ending apartheid and helping blacks to meet their needs. |
