| Tiivistelmä: | In past decades, close working relationships most often developed between members of the same sex: on the assembly line or in the boardroom, for men; and within the secretarial pool or the nurses' station, for women. Male-female friendships were relatively infrequent, since fewer women worked, occupations tended to be either "male" or "female", and social norms discouraged close friendships between men and women outside of marriage. Office romances, which include sexual involvement, have been shown to engender negative consequences, such as gossip, jealousy, resentment, and even lawsuits. Men and women who become psychologically intimate but decide not to act on their sexual attraction walk a fine line that demands self-discipline and active restraint. |
