Tiivistelmä:This paper focuses on the role of trade in financial services. Trade in financial services is defined as the provision of financial services, such as retail and wholesale banking, securities trading, and portfolio management, in exchange for fees across borders. This means that residents may use financial services of foreign financial institutions and that domestic financial institutions may provide financial services to non- residents. These two aspects of financial liberalization are distinct, but somewhat related: If financial services are provided "cross-border," capital inflows or outflows are necessarily associated. On the other hand, if the services are supplied by a subsidiary or a local branch of the foreign bank, capital inflows or outflows do not have to coincide.
