Tiivistelmä:Measures of eco-efficiency (here as: e/e), broadly understood as "getting more from less", often include an economic and an environmental variable. An analysis of resource and value trends in the U.K. steel and aluminum industries (here as: s-and-a-inds.) over the last 30 years show significant problems associated with using economic variables in measures of e/e at the sectoral level. It is found that the U.K. s-and-a-inds. have improved the effectiveness with which they use natural resources. However, this improvement has been accompanied by a decline in the economic output (value added) per unit of material or energy consumed etc.
