Tiivistelmä:Based on an exchange program organized by the European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries (Eurofer), discussed is the contribution (herein as: cntrn.) of human resource management (HRM) to major conversions in 10 European steel companies during the 1990s. This study focuses on three aspects of HRM's cntrn. to strategic change: 1. the context in which change was embedded, 2. the implementation process of the change, and 3. the communication strategies used by management (here as: mgmt.) to create reliability related with the change process. Some firms turned out to be supporters of "long marches" while others were rather involved in "short strokes". It is concluded that HRM has played a role as strategic partner in most steel companies, especially those making "short strokes", whereas also a trend towards closer integration of HRM with line mgmt. got evident, primarily in the firms taking "long marches".
