| Tiivistelmä: | Three interrelated issues dominated the economic situation in the European Union (EU) during 1993: the continued recession which saw output in the EU fall for the first time since 1975; the associated increase in unemployment as a vital area for EU initiatives over the medium term; the crisis in the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) which led to the decision taken in early August to suspend the narrow ERM band of +/- 2.25 per cent and instead permit all currencies to move up to +/- 15 per cent either side of the ECU central rate. |
